Atlantic City is quite rightly known as the second-largest casino market in the whole of the USA, and today marks an amazing turn of events with it announcing the twelfth casino to bless the city’s streets.

An all new $2.4 billion dollar resort known as Revel is to open in the hopes that it will help to increase the revenue’s of the struggling land-based casino industry.

This is to be the very first completely non-smoking casino in Atlantic City and is due to offer amazing views of the ocean from floor-to-ceiling. It’s about time they finished this project, because it has been ongoing for close to half a decade now. During the financial crisis of 2008 the revel project suffered major losses both financially and mortally, with three top level executives losing their lives in a fatal place crash that very same year. If it wasn’t for very generous state tax incentives it could be argued that the casino may never have reached completion.

One thing Revel certainly won’t disappoint with is the games offering. With a total of 1898 rooms chock full of 160 table games and 2450 slot machines, in addition to 14 massive restaurants, a 5000-seat auditorium, and that’s not to even mention the 10 pools and huge spa facility. To top it all off the casino is due to host Beyoncé on this coming Memorial Day weekend for some much needed publicity. I dread to think what that stunt is costing them.

The volume of US citizens traveling to, creating accounts and participating in web based online casinos continues to grow in number for many years now, inspite of the introduction of the 2006 regulation which essentially made online gambling illegal in the country.

On the other hand, both Atlantic City and Las Vegas’ land-based casinos keep bringing in gamblers from around the planet, and the launching of this most recent business on the sea front of Atlantic City demonstrates that there’s definitely sufficient desire equally at a land-based level and online to back up the existence of these extravagant casinos.

Whilst quite a few states within the USA are taking into consideration methods and techniques of legalizing gambling in USA and controlling at the very least a small number of online gambling sites and casinos, there are still several states which have been moving in the other direction.

Among the list of states that seem to frown upon the practise of gambling is Utah. Stephen Sandstorm, a Republican representative, had announced a piece of legislation in the House, known as HB108, which was put in place to ban online gambling from the state entirely. This would have been the case even if the federal government legalized gambling. Unfortunately for the residents of Utah this bill was approved in the House of Representatives by way of a 61 to 9 vote on 21st February 2012, and is now due to proceed to the United States Senate. The oppositions to the bill in question attempted to hold up the process by mentioning that any government laws passed would need to incorporate a state-by-state clause for opting-out and therefore wouldn’t be legally binding within Utah. Consequently there was clearly no requirement for a bill such as HB108. Sandstrom, who happens to be running for USA Congress, argued that any kind of federal government opt-out term would need to be applied by the government of Utah within just two months from the date of the federal enactment. There could well be unanticipated setbacks in acting during that time. His proposed legislation would defend Utah against developing a scenario of legalized online casino gambling automatically. HB108, if approved, would ensure it is legally binding on the governor of Utah to instantly inform Washington DC of the fact that Utah is not going to be involved in any online gambling regardless of whether it is granted by law and exercises its legal rights to opt out even in advance of this kind of potential federal government regulation being enacted. Sandstrom asserted that Utah was a one of a kind state for the reason that it doesn’t condone any kinds of gambling, whether online or offline.

The New Year is already showing promise in terms of progress in the legalizing of online gambling across the globe. To start things off, Denmark, a leading market in Europe recently put its new online gambling regulations into effect and has opened its market to online casino operators. But what about online gambling in USA?

Gambling operators and legislative authorities who have been in favor of the legalization of online gambling in the US have been trying hard to get the online gambling bill passed and they are hopeful that 2012 will be the year where things finally fall in place. So far the New Jersey Senator Raymond Lesniak has been trying hard to push the bill for legalization of online gambling in the state, but his only obstacle seems to be the Governor Chris Christie who has been doing everything in his power to prevent online gambling within state borders. Fortunately, the gambling capital of the nation – Nevada, has been making advancements with online poker.

The State of Nevada has been backing Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid who has been for legalization of online gambling. Under the Obama administration the Department of Justice recently announced that even if communications do cross state borders, online gambling can be regulated by the state under state law. This would mean that online lotteries and online poker sites could offer their services within the state of Nevada. The only exception would be online sports betting which comes under the Wire Act of 1961. The Nevada Gaming Commission has been working in favor of online poker. And according to State regulations companies that have already been licensed by the state can expand their current status onto the internet.

In all it looks like Nevada will lead the way to legalized online gambling and hopefully other states will follow en suite.

Daniel Eremian, brother-in-law to a prolific United States Congressman has been charged in federal court with multiple counts of racketeering and illegal gambling, and is one of the first to be convicted as such under the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) of 2006.

Mr Eremian is the 61 year old brother-in-law of John Tierney, an eight-term US Representative. He was found guilty in a US District Court in Boston, Massachusetts this Monday. He was charged with numerous crimes including racketeering in relation to a gambling operation he ran under the guise of an online casino based within Antigua, one of the Caribbean islands.

Eremian’s full list of convictions include illegal gambling, racketeering conspiracy, racketeering, and a plethora of other related charges. Co-defendant Todd Lyons has now gone down in history as the first person in history to be convinced under the UIGEA. Todd pleaded guilty to multiple counts of illegal gambling in the USA and racketeering.

Prosecutors are claiming that Eremian and Robert, his brother, ran the offshore sports gambling website from the island of Antigua and accepted wagers from US gamblers illegally. It has been revealed by he government that Lyons was just one many agents that took part in the effort to collect millions of dollars between 1998 to 2006.

US Attorney Carmen Ortiz declared that “Today’s convictions should serve as a message to those involved with illegal gambling schemes that the government will apply the full weight of its resources to identify, investigate and prosecute individuals who seek to profit from offshore gambling,” when questioned in court on Monday. Adding “we are satisfied with the verdict, as it is consistent with the evidence put forward in this case.”

Although Eremian and Lyons were convicted of far worse charges, they were acquitted of numerous counts of money laundering. It has also been revealed that Eremian was found to be not guilty of a number of counts of acceptance of financial instruments for unlawful Internet gambling, which were brought under UIGEA.

Gambling in the USA has of recent years been in a tricky situation, and now there is a bit of good news and bad news for the gamblers of Massachusetts. The House and the Senate have come up with a bill that will see the operation of land based casinos in the state, however it does not look all that good for online casinos. If any differences are to be found on the bills, a conference committee that represents both the legal bodies would try to sort out the differences.

Republican and Representative Dan Winslow proposed the amendment that will legalize statewide online poker, which was passed by the House but did not feature in the Senate version that was passed last week. “Licensed internet poker will boost the economy of the state and will also provide high tech jobs in the field of software development” added the representative.

The original amendment that was passed by the House is believed to be substituted though the Massachusetts Gaming Commission which has ordered further studies on online poker that is expected to be completed by July 1st of 2012. According to the commission the study will also include the analysis of federal and state laws that can be used once legalization takes place. Until then the wait continues when it comes to online gambling in Massachusetts.

Online gambling enthusiasts in Massachusetts should keep their fingers crossed, because a new amendment has been filed to allow for online gambling in the form of internet poker to be allowed. It was State Representative Dan Winslow who filed the amendment to be part of the bill that discusses the expansion of land based gambling projects in the State of Massachusetts. Winslow, a Republican from Norfolk, says that if his proposal first the window allowed in the gambling bill it could provide a major source of revenue, could create a number if high tech jobs in software and regulatory areas and could cater to the online gambling needs of the State of Massachusetts.

Winslow has defined the details of the proposal according to which there should be five licenses that are valid for a 5 year period. A 10% rake would be levied on every pot and the State of Massachusetts will receive 70% of the rake. The proposal is not limited to intrastate online gambling. Winslow proposes that players from all over the world be allowed to sign up and gamble. If Winslow’s proposal is passed a new Massachusetts Gaming Commission will have to develop a model of legislation and regulations for online poker by July next year. Who knows, maybe this is the start of more gambling in USA to come.

Tommy Wells, the Council Member of the District of Columbia, believes that the legalization of online gambling in Washington DC was a bad decision and he intends to introduce a legislation to block online gambling even before it is tried in the state. Wells believes that the process of online gambling is not transparent and also believes that online gambling will cause negative effects on people.

Wells stated that online gambling could become an addiction and he only wants what is good for the public. But Psychiatry Professor Howard J. Shaffer of the Harvard Medical School has stated that the consequences of online gambling on the public would be minimal. Prof. Howard and his colleague Ryan Martin co-authored an article titled Disordered Gambling: Etiology, Trajectory and Clinical Considerations” that shed light on a lot of the perceived knowledge that surrounds gambling and its effects on society. The article shows that a number of pathological gamblers who were above the age of 35 years had actually decreased from 0.7% to 0.6% and this took place at a time when there were major expansions happening in the US gambling industry. As good as Wells’ intentions may be, it does seem a little dramatic.

Looks like even the forces of nature are not going to make Tunica casinos go away from the face of earth. Many USA casinos had to shut shop due to heavy flooding caused by the rise of water in the Mississippi in the region of Tunica. Well casinos that have gone to hell in the hands of lawmakers and new legislation took the flooding with a pinch of salt as the Gold Strike Casino has swung open its doors for gamblers after the flood. This has given inspiration for the rest of the flooded casinos to hasten work to reopen.

Some people face natural calamities with a different spirit. Sitting on his front porch a man watched as it started raining. Slowly the rain picked up momentum and came down heavily. When he finally realised that it was a flood, along came a rowboat, and a man who offered to help him.

But, the owner of the house refused saying that the Almighty Lord will take care of him. As the rain continued he had no other go but to stand on a chair in his front porch as the water level had increased. Once again there was a good Samaritan in a rowboat who offered to help, which the house owner refused yet another time stating that the Lord will take care of him.

As hours passed the owner of the house was found on the roof of the house, by a passing helicopter and the pilot offers to help. Once again it was the same reply from the house owner.

Finally the man on the roof of the house drowned due to rising water levels. When he entered Heaven the Lord was faced with a question by the man, “Lord, why did you forget to take care of me?”

The Lord answered “Now, what do you think the two rowboats and a helicopter were for?”
